Today’s data throughput needs are peaking. There is very less scope for improvement with 4G LTE to meet the demand. And, this is where 5G will take baton.
Keysight technologies is one of the premiere electronic test and measurement company. By numbers, it is the largest test and manufacturing company. its revenue last year was 3.5bn with presence in 11+ countries in the world. Having presence in India with 1100 people working across 7 locations, it has an R&D center in Manesar, Haryana, Bangalore and Calcutta. It particularly serve four market segments- Aerospace & Defense, Communication (wireless communication), Semicon industry or chip set design (right from design till manufacturing stage), Industrial segment (automotive is an upcoming segment for Keysight technologies, it provides solutions for connected cars, car to car communication, automotive radar solution, sophisticated solution for battery test in electronic vehicles).
Right now, 5G is in the design stage, the infancy stage where the standards are getting developed, chipsets are getting designed according to the standards. It provides solutions for testing and validating the designs of the standards, upcoming equipment and chipsets. Giving more information, Sandeep Kapoor, keysight Technologies Country Head Marketing- India, Regional Head Aerospace Defense Marketing- EMEAI, has recently had an exclusive interaction with ITNewsBuzz team. Let’s check out the excerpts of the meeting.
ITNewsBuzz: What are the latest trends in T&M equipment domains? How is Keysight differentiating itself from other competitors?
Sandeep Kapoor: In communication, 5G is a big focus area. Lot of investments are happening globally by vendors as well as big companies like Keysight. For aerospace and defense, electronic warfare or cyber warfare is a big trend. For automotive industry, electric vehicle is a big trend.
In the telecom stack, there are different layers. Layer one is the physical layer and layer seven is the application layer. We provide solutions right from layer one to layer seven and across the eco system, right from the chipset design to the service provider. Offering solutions from layer 1 to layer 7 is very rare, no one provides the complete solution. This is one of Keysight’s key USPs. Keysight has always been part of the standard bodies, technical bodies globally- from the inception stage of technologies. 5G is being talked about today, but we joined all the standard bodies and industry organizations for 5G in 2014. By virtue of being associated with all the standard bodies, we have lot of knowledge and a lot of reference cases, from which our customers can be benefitted.
ITNewsBuzz: Do you think India will be able to launch 5G by 2020?
Sandeep Kapoor: By 2020-22, India will definitely launch 5G. Though it is evolving as we speak, it will meet & exceed industry demands. Data consumption in India is increasing. Today’s data throughput needs are peaking. There is very less scope for improvement with 4G LTE to meet the demand. And, this is where 5G will take the baton. In 2014, data consumption per consumer was 0.26 GB and today it is 8.8-9 GB. It has grown thirty-five times in four years.
ITNewsBuzz: What are the challenges for 5G rollout and how is Keysight playing its role in coping up with these challenges?
Sandeep Kapoor: To reach the rollout stage, there are a lot of challenges. The standards are still evolving. First major standard rollout came in December, 2017. The second one in June 2018 and the next one is expected in 2019. With the previous version of communication technologies, tools, 2G and 3G, standards did not evolve this fast. Therefore, all the equipment providers, solution providers have to prepare themselves for all the changes to ensure that the equipment they are manufacturing align with the latest trends. This is a big challenge for equipment providers.
At Keysight, we are enabling our customers to test equipment’s, as soon as the new standards are rolled out. This is possible due to our understanding and knowledge in providing the solutions in compliance with the final standards. This is way; we are going ahead in the complete eco system. Till the time it comes to service providers stage, the provider stage is quite light because it is still two-three years ahead.
ITNewsBuzz: Who is your major competitor in India?
Sandeep Kapoor: We have got different product segments. Some are wireless segments whereas some are high speed digital segment. We provide the whole portfolio and therefore we have multiple competitors. Few of them are- Rohde & Schwarz, Tektronix, Spirent, etc.
How do you see the latest technologies like IoT and AI from Keysight Technologies point of view?
Sandeep Kapoor: IoT is a small sensor device which captures the inputs and hasat the backhand the complete application software platform. There is a sensor, the sensor may be pointing towards a particular area. The sensors are specific, if there are any pesticides or germs in that particular area where it is pointing towards, they will scan the whole area and send back information. This helps in taking corrective actions from backhand. Sensors work on battery and the battery life is very critical because there will be billions of such sensors across the world and you cannot afford to change the battery every now and then. The sensors are so current sensitive and we need to test the battery at the pico ampere level, so that current consumptions can be minimal. That is a big testing.
We provide solutions to IoT providers wherein we can do the current measurement at the lowest level of current. This way the life of the battery increases and the sensor also works. It is the biggest solution we provide. We do not provide solutions for the application and software. Everyone can provide a solution for battery as the MPR level goes up but as the number of MPRs go down, it gets critical. We are a strong player in that font.
ITNewsBuzz: Are you offering your services through partners or directly?
Sandeep Kapoor: We offer services through partners as well as directly. In India, we have around twelve-thirteen active partners. Depending upon the market scenario and market requirement, we plan to increase the number of partners. We have added couple of partners in the past three years.
ITNewsBuzz: How is Ixia’s acquisition helping you?
Sandeep Kapoor: In any form of testing, there are levels, layer one to layer seven. Keysight was very strong in providing layer one to layer three solutions and earlier we did not provide solutions beyond layer three. With Ixia coming in, we have been able to provide further solutions for further layers, and this completed our portfolio. Customers can now look at Keysight as a single vendor who can help them provide a complete solution through the layers and across the ecosystem.
ITNewsBuzz: How is your position in India going on in terms of revenue growth, customer growth?
Sandeep Kapoor: Our revenue is growing at a rate that is double the market growth rate. The market growth is 4-5% a year. We are by far number one player and in the Voice & Data hundred awards. For the past twenty years we are the number one service provider.
ITNewsBuzz: What is your message for customers and partners?
Sandeep Kapoor: Keysight Measurement Insights is Keysight’s annual flagship event where we invite all our customers and prospects who are working in wireless technologies and high speed digital test technologies. High speed digital test means chipset designs and within that there are high end technologies. This event takes place in two locations, Delhi and Bangalore. For aerospace and defense customers, there is another event known as Aerospace and Defense Symposium. It happens in the month of April every year. This is for customers who are working in domains like space, aerospace and defense.
We understand every customer has their own choice from various test and measurement service providers. With Keysight their advantage is, we can provide them solutions through layer one to layer seven and across the different lifecycles of their products and solutions. Keysight is a player which along with product also provide calibration services as well as a complete lifecycle management services. We have got 75 years of knowledge in measurement science. We started as Hewlett Packard. Hewlett Packard’s original business is what Keysight is and we have in-depth knowledge of measurement science and that helps in moving ahead of the customer in terms of upcoming technologies and our customers can take real benefit of all that knowledge and our participation in industry forums.
ITNewsBuzz: What tips do you want to give to partners who are dipping toes in the test & measurement and equipment market?
Sandeep Kapoor: My message to them would be, they need to continuously learn and upskill themselves. Technology evolution is getting brutal with every passing day. Technology lifecycle has become very short, every two-three years there are new technologies emerging. If partners have to stay in the game, they need to be completely upskilled and they need to ensure that the team is upskilled. They also need to be at par with the curve in terms of the evolving technologies.
ITNewsBuzz: Where do you see Keysight Technologies five years down the line?
Sandeep Kapoor: Five years down the line, technology will move to the next stage. If not 6G, 5G plus will come. DDR technology will also move to the next stage. Since we are contributor to technology, with every evolution we will come up with new solutions. Our share price in the market is $66 and market perceives that our future is bright. The growth has been very high in the last couple of years because of our skillset and our outlook for the future.
